  1. I’d like to brag on Heather Solos of http://home-ec101.com. In the last two years, she’s built her online blog into a professional business, published a book, is in the works to publish a second, and has created a new app that could revolutionize a popular social media platform. She has also spoken at and helped organize several national blogging conferences. She is on the verge of exploding and I know she could benefit from strong mentoring in a professional atmosphere. I’d love to see her reach her goals 18 months sooner than she has planned. I think your program may help her to do that.

  2. One thing I’ve learned from past Hot Mommas events is that women too often resist acknowledging their own strengths, attributes, and accomplishments. So, although I have never done anything like this before, I accepted Kathy’s challenge to brag about myself to try and win a fellowship for this weekend’s Guerilla Mentoring. Here it is: throughout recent professional and personal challenges I have become my own career coach and my own life coach. I’ve developed a variety of new professional skills, pushed my threshold for embarrassment through creative writing, belly dancing (and oh, bragging about myself online), developed the best time management skills I’ve had in my LIFE, maintained involvement in volunteer work, and kept (mostly) positive momentum as I transition to a new city. While I’m very self-directed, I am always eager to find opportunities for collaborative brainstorming and mentorship. I’ve gotten so much out of your previous events and look forward to joining you again, either at this event or in the future.

  3. I am here to brag about one Sultana L. Khan. While Ms. Khan is still in the early stages of her professional career, she has already defined herself with perseverance and resilience. After losing her job last year as an account executive (the public relations firm she worked for was bought out by a larger company), Ms. Khan entered into the rough-and-tumble job market of a down economy. Although highly talented and personable, it was difficult to get her proverbial foot in the door with only a few years on her professional resume and having had less than a year in DC to build a network. After a few months, Ms. Khan swallowed her pride and took a temp job as a receptionist and continued to relentlessly apply for better opportunities. Despite discouragingly few responses, Ms. Khan persisted in her efforts all the while serving as a rock of support for several friends going through similar struggles as well as assisting both her father and mother with their own businesses. There has recently been some payoff for Ms. Khan’s efforts, as she was able to land a position at a new public relations firm—albeit still in a temp position. Ms. Khan is incredibly gifted and bright and just needs that one advantage, that one break, that one opportunity that will allow her to prove her full potential. Please consider her for your Guerrilla Mentoring event, as she truly is a worthwhile candidate who could benefit greatly from it. For more information on Ms. Khan, I can be reached at brburris@gmail.com.
