How to make more money, be more successful, and have more fun in 2012

By Kathy Korman Frey

I’m in a group called “Circle.” Here, each month, eight of us confide about business and personal matters to trusted advisors. It pretty much rocks.  Kassie Rempel is one of the members. Today, I received what I deemed a “Circle 911” from another member of the group.

Ladies,

In case you don’t know this yet, Kassie has been nominated as one of DC’s best dressed, and we have to vote for her!  Here is the link:   http://www.bizjournals.com/washington/blog/best-in-business/2012/01/best-in-business-best-dressed.html.

 XOXO

A

So – why do we care about this? And what’s in this for you? And what’s the meaning of life? And will you really get in trouble if you take the mattress tags off?

This (less the mattress tag info) will be answered for you in this very post.

SHOES! Kassie owns SimplySoles.com. As if that’s not enough right there.

SimplySoles.com is an uber-successful online shoe business. She also has developed her own shoe line, LilyBee, so that you can chase kids and tackle people and look stylish while doing it.

We heart Kassie, here’s why. Aside from being a shoe goddess, this is what Kassie does when I call her about bringing over a whole gaggle of students from my Women’s Entrepreneurial Leadership class at the George Washington University: Kassie says, “Yes.”

When I call Kassie to bring over a whole ton of State Department cultural exchange students and take over her store, Kassie says, “Yes.”

When I call her to host a delegation of women from the Middle East, Kassie says, “Yes.”

So, now – it is OUR turn to say (you guessed it) – to say “yes”  back to Kassie. We are going to vote for her – not just because she looks purty outside and deserves it, but because she’s DDG (drop dead gorgeous) inside too. And isn’t that the BEST dressed of ALL? Look at all she does for the business community and students…and this is a DROP in the bucket my friends.

Vote for her for the Washington Business Journal’s “Best of Business, Best Dressed” and let’s show them what coming together around Best Dressed really looks like. ((p.s. The lessons re: cold hard cashola, are below)).

Thank you

Food for thought and hard facts around money, success, and fun in 2012:

Kassie’s actions, and ours (if you voted for her) serve as a live case study for the following tickets to success. I’ve culled through scads of research over about a decade, so you don’t have to.

 1.      More money – By mentoring my students and women, Kassie served as a mentor time and time again. In giving back to Kassie and paying it forward, you are doing the same. Don’t underestimate how relationships will start these days: Digitally. Studies have shown that individuals with mentors ascend higher in organizations, and are paid more. Be part of the virtuous circle.

 2.      More successful – Women with five or more mentors have higher perceptions of success and self-confidence. This is consistent with findings in the positive psychology movement that shows people with five or more close friends are happier.  Success in work, and life – it’s what we all want mas o menos, no?

 3.      Fun – Is “fun” part of your success equation in work and life? What an industrious nation we are. Our work-life and family policies are some of the worst in the world. Yet, the largest HR study in the world show that work-life  is one of the top three future concerns globally for every region in the world except Asia. So, it’s up to YOU to carve out your own. In participating in a vote around fashion, come on – how fun is THAT?

Your 2012 Resolutions: Who will be your mentor (or mentors) in 2012? Who will you mentor? What is on your fun list?
