Toolkit for Women’s Success: Self-Care

In the Hot Mommas Project Insider’s Blog, I recently wrote a post about giving myself a wife for Mother’s Day. Part of it was in jest, part of it is deadly serious, and it all has to to do with SUPPORT.  There are many different ways in which women need, would like, and/or dream of support but can’t seem to find it, or don’t know how.

One of the ways is a virtual assistant.

This was the topic of my insider’s blog post.  Everyone always wants the Hot Mommas Project to start ancillary businesses like a staffing company, but, I’d rather have a virtual assistant firm with supporters who are specifically screened and trained to help with a laundry list of tasks from replacing lightbulbs to buying gifts and writing thank you notes to filling out forms to checking emails. Follow the post to see what interesting developments surface with regard to how individuals find and use virtual assistants.

Another way is self-care.

Did you know a Swedish study demonstrated the husbands of intelligent women live longer?  Some might argue all women are intelligent in the ways of nurturing and caregiving.  However, here is our crime ladies: We don’t do it for ourselves.  It’s important to note that – in the Hot Mommas Project national survey – something very disturbing surfaced:

Self care is literally OFF the radar screen for many women.

This is a BIG PROBLEM.  I used to work at the National Council on the Aging where stats of women living longer were well-known and quoted throughout the organization. With the lack of self care, I am actually waiting for the day when actuaries start telling us that, no, women are NOT living as long.  So see the links below and self-care. It doesn’t have to be fancy, just do SOMETHING for yourself to restore. People don’t have overdraft protection.

Good Guys & Gals: Helping busy women.

Below are “businesses that get it”: They admire, respect, and support women.  We make 80% of household purchasing decisions ladies, so, here’s where to channel that power.

Alchemie Forever – This is a great skin care line run by a female entrepreneur who brought her family’s products used in their swiss medi-spa over to the states. Think “Swiss Family Polla.” See their great Mother’s Day packages at this link: http://www.alchimie-forever.com/

SEPHORA – A 2009 and 2010 Hot Mommas Project sponsor. We heart SEPHORA, doesn’t everyone?

Ted Gibson Salon & Hela Spa – This power duo is offering discounts to DC Hot Mommas between May 1 and 9. Contact them to take advantage of this special promotion offered to Hot Mommas! Love people who have our backs!

We can’t forget our official “sleep away” spa GREEN VALLEY SPA in Utah. Delicious. Maybe you can take your wife there. :)

What is the Hot Mommas Project?

The Hot Mommas Project is an award-winning venture housed at the George Washington University School of Business.  We make women’s stories teachable using our “case wizard” at www.HotMommasProject.org . The Hot Mommas Project library is the first of its kind, providing scalable, global access to role models and virtual mentors that can be used by educators, trainers, and parents. We’ve been featured in Prentice Hall textbooks, the Washington Post Magazine, NPR and are the winner of a national Coleman Foundation case award.

How you can get involved: Write your story, or nominate a dynamic woman 18 or older.

Our call for 2011 nominations has begun. While the contest runs through January 31, 2011 – Start now! There will be prizes this spring and fall for early bird publishers.

How it works: Nominated women come online, write their story using our “case wizard,” and click “publish” to be permanently archived in our case library.  Winners will be published in a leading Prentice Hall textbook in addition to other honors and prizes. To participate, nominate a dynamic woman 18 or older (yourself included) here or find us on Twitter. No, you do not need to be a mom. To inquire about sponsorship, email us.

  1. We staff several Virtual Assistants through Momentum Resources. For many working moms, it’s a great part-time, work from home role. For the women (and men!) that employ them, they get a really remarkable resource at a great price. From authors to solo practitioners (accountants, lawyers, therapists), a Virtual Assistant allows YOU to do only what YOU can do and outsource the rest. One of my personal challenges with using a VA is saying, “well by the time I explain this I could’ve just done this myself.” But what you need to remember is that you just have to explain it once, the next time she already knows what to do and you can get back to doing what you need to be doing!
